Start with what your children enjoy

Some children love stories; others prefer finding patterns, spotting animals in decoration or taking photographs. Share their ages and interests when enquiring. A request for a family-friendly visit becomes much more useful when the guide knows what tends to hold their attention.

Avoid promising that every child will be fascinated by every stop. Instead, agree on a small number of highlights and let curiosity guide the conversation between them. One well-understood building can leave a stronger memory than a list of unfamiliar names.

Turn looking into a shared activity

Ask children to choose one detail they would like to explain to the rest of the family. Older children might compare how people used public spaces; younger ones could look for shapes or describe what they think a building was for. Treat their guesses as openings for a conversation with the guide.

Photography can also give a child a useful role. Ask for a wide scene, an interesting detail and a picture that captures their favourite moment. Keep the activity flexible so it supports the visit rather than becoming another task to finish.

Build in ordinary comforts

Arrange the day around your family’s usual energy levels as far as the schedule allows. Discuss breaks, food preferences and how much walking is realistic. Carry water and the small essentials your family normally needs, and choose footwear suited to an outdoor archaeological visit.

If transport is part of your programme, provide the children’s ages and ask about appropriate seating arrangements in advance. For cruise visits, keep the ship’s return time in the plan rather than compensating for a slow morning with a rushed afternoon.

Let a good visit be enough

A successful family day may end with a few favourite stories and time to talk about them. It does not need the largest possible itinerary. Agree which optional stop you would drop first, and tell the guide when the children need a different pace. Flexibility works best when it is part of the original plan.
